10. Tyrrhenian Sea and its Islands
10. The Tyrrhenian Sea and Isola Ponza
We are now heading for the first of the islands in the Tyrrhenian sea. The Northern group has Ponza as the main island. Not to be confused with the Italian Charles Ponzi, the inventor of the infamous Ponzi scheme.
We have missed out on a very high island, Mount Circeo which we will visit on the return trip and is worth a visit.
The islands in this archipelago are invariably all mountainous. With high cliffs descending to deep waters.
We again had a wonderful sail on a flat sea. So far the wind has been consistent and the sea has been flat. The perfect weather for long distance sailing.
Isla di Ponza is stunning!! It has high craggy mountains and chalk cliffs with lots of caves and bays. The town, Lesley describes is like a toy town. The houses on the front are painted in pink, red, yellow, cream, blue and white. We anchored in the bay next to the village and were fascinated by the sight. It was magical!
Arriving at Ponza
Roaming the streets of Ponza is like a charming Greek Village. Most of the houses are white washed with blue windows. The Steps and sides of the road are white. Ponza is definitely worth a visit..
We’re enjoying the fish dishes, Mike loves tuna and I’m pretty stuck on Mixed Fried Fish! We’ve had some delicious local white wines! The quality of fruit and veg is superb!!
ReplyDeleteOn board Les cooks in her usual superb way. e.g. Pea Risotto with Fennel and Lemon and Pamigiano; Caesar Salad; Tuna Salad;
