30. TRAPANI
30. THE CITY OF TRAPANI
It is interesting comparing Palermo to Trapani. Both are big ports Trapani deals with many ferries that go to the Egadi islands and is also a container port as well as a port for the long flat ships which supply oil rigs.
As for the town it shows it’s Baroque architecture in true style - well looked after with clean streets and no street food, only restaurants. It is not a bustling noisy seemingly chaotic town like Palermo but orderly and gracious but still catering for the tourist with restaurants and bars dressed up to attract the passer-by.
The one thing that struck me at first was how many enormous doors there were. Doors which were elegant and cared for providing grandeur for the houses. Doors which are two floors high often leading to small court yards.
Aperol Spritz is the fashionable drink and looks very inviting. A long glass of red with much ice and orange to be sipped slowly otherwise there will be regrets the next day.
The evening brings the people out. Locals and tourists alike promenade in the evening, finding a bar for the Aperol Spritz with a tapas or a restaurant for a meal.

I know how this fellow must feel - I experienced the same on the crossing over from France !
The most magnificent Italian Baroque Doors so resplendent with their highly decorative and theatrical style and are found down quite a few of the streets.

I have to show this photo of an Italian who was
very verbose (with his hands)
and commanded the attention of all.
This was a photo of a church which added a hint of Muslim architecture as the Muslims ruled this area of Italy at one time.
After this we sailed back to Flavagnana till sailing to Marsala, our next port of call.
Mike wonderful photos and reinforce very happy and pleasant recent memories.
ReplyDeleteNice to see the Super 4 in action! Re your comment about huge doors I have an unsubstantiated theory (based on our observations of the same outsized doorways - and staircases and everything else - all over Naples) that the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies being a rather tin-pot monarchy they had to make everything bigger than anywhere else (the Neapolitan palazzos are gigantic) to compensate...M xx
